For all you teachers of rhetoric out there, here's a nice example of reductio ad absurdum. Can you say it 10 times fast? : )
A group out here in Washington is introducing a bill that would require procreation to validate a marriage. That is, if you get married, and you don't have kids within three years, your marriage is considered invalid and you lose state privileges granted to married couples. This is in response to a Washington state supreme court decision that bars same-sex marriages on the grounds that the state has legitimate state interests in limiting marriage to couples who can have and raise children together.
The bill also proposes that having a child together constitutes a marriage and that divorce should not be allowed when the couple have a child. If this law were to pass, Jen and I would no longer be married in the eyes of the state of Washington. It'll be interesting to see how it's handled in the legislature because by pointing to the absurdities inherent in the bill, they provide evidence for the weakness of the supreme court ruling.
