MLA
So, I got my MLA renewal notice today, and I'm wondering, do I really need to spend $75 on this? I mean, how important that that membership is listed on my CV? Comments?

Hi Susie,
I guess you would have to ask yourself what the membership does for you. Are you planning on presenting at/attending MLA confereces, reading MLA journals, using MLA resources in any way? It'd be best, I think, to spend your money on organizations that do the most for you.
For instance, I'm a member of NCTE and CCCs because I use their resources often, and I'm thinking about joining TYCA because I teach in a two-year college. I don't belong to MLA, but when it comes time to go on the market, I'll probably join for a year so that I can interview at MLA conferences.
I'd say take that money and spend it on English Ed. journals and organizations or other organizations that better fit with your scholarly/professional goals and interests.

I second all Brad said & add only, "what has MLA done for YOU lately?"
Cuz...in the immortal words of Gwen Guthrie,
Ain't nothin' goin' on but the rent

I'd find out what your colleagues think of MLA and membership in the organization ... they're the ones who vote on your tenure ...
