Book Reps
So, evidently when you are a read ph.d., book reps will give you lots of stuff. Two different reps in the past two days have stopped into the office and offered me free books. One is even sending me 8 copies of a text for tutors (there are only 8 students in my class next semester) because "they don't cost anything anyway." (Nikki, I'll be sending you some stuff on visual arguments that might help your diss.) Ah, the perks of being a real ph.d. That's about the only one, besides the copier and long distance codes....

I asked one for the latest edition of Robin Williams' Non-Designer's...and got a copy of that, one of typography, and a three-book set (with the Non-Design, Typograpy, web design, oh, and a T-Shirt designed by Williams).

I want that package Lori got! Hey Lori - if you can finagle another set (plus T-shirt), spread the love this way! :)
I use the Williams Non-Designer book in Tech Writing and I know Kalmbach or Fortune also uses it in Visual Rhetoric or Hypertext, one of them. It's a really easy to follow basic guide to design on the page.

I'm using non-designers next semester in my persuasive writing course (described as a course for writing for business, communication, industry, and government) and combining it with a "Quick and not-so dirty guide to business writing." Williams covers the design and layout aspect of everything from business cards to web sites, and the "dirty guide" covers the rhetoric of these things.
Williams is wonderful...bare minimum I introduce first-year students to her CRAP Principles.
It's a great book. I'll work on getting sets for Marcy and Nikki.

Yeah, I love it when my students write in the journals, "All I could think of when I did this assignment was CRAP." Gives me a chuckle. (Consistency, repetition, alignment, and proximity, for you non-CRAP people)
