On jealousy and a little wounded pride

Hi all,

So I was studying/researching for my comps today, and I came across this article in Pedagogy 6.1 (2006) 7-24, Duke UP: "The Millennial Teacher: Metaphors for a New Generation," written by Kristine Johnson.

When you read the article you learn that Johnson graduated from high school in 2000, making her part of the millennial generation, and from college in 2004, which means she started grad school in the fall 2004. Now here it is in the fall 2006, just two years later, and she already has an article published in a major journal.

I gotta say, I'm a touch jealous, quite humbled, and pretty damn impressed. : )

If you're at all interested in conceptual metaphor and the way it might impact teaching/classroom interactions, you should check out the article. It's got some interesting things to say.

Ugh--I know the feeling. It seems like every idea I have for a project has been "done" already. I feel like I've come to the movie an hour late. Then there are these young upstarts. I think it must be a couple of things: 1) being in the right place at the right time, and/or 2) hanging out with the right people. It's not what you know, it's who you know, and we just don't the right people (yet).

Clearly we hate people like this woman...but on the upside Brad, you have quite the headstart on me & a much longer career ahead in which to get ahead, so pace yourself.

And I'm with Susie on why the young upstarts tend to shine: it's about who is in their network. But I also sort of think the right people are right here in this blog...we've all got contacts and cool connections...we're all smarter than the average bear...and with time maybe we'll be able to collaborate on some cool projects. At least, I hope that's one thing that happens in this space...but if it doesn't, it's still so good to still be in touch with you all.
