I Got My Teach On...

First day & few problems. The union and admin settled their differences late last night. Not a glorious first day teaching...I opted to get the mandatory timed writing exam out of the way so it wouldn't mess with my schedule next week...not an impressive start.

Only problem was my first classroom...22 students and 20 desks. I had one student writing her exam at a side table and another shared my desk. But it looks like I might be able to transfer us out of there and into a computer classroom for a rockin' 3 days a week! My other class may have to settle for only 2 days a week or maybe I'll get lucky.

Comcast guy is here...taking longer than expected for my cable and internet to get installed because apparently WOW was here last and destroyed all of Comcast's lines in...so he's having to run all new cables. As long as it's up and running on time for Olbermann and Project Runway tonight, I'll be the happiest camper in the Detroit area...no TV for 6 weeks is too long!

Brad emailed & it looks like Jen might be joining us! If you get an email uninviting you, ignore it...I was just cleaning out duplicate email addresses, not eliminating members...:)

Having never done it before, it was really hard teaching writing without consistent access to a computerized classroom. I did that for a couple of quarters last year.

I could schedule a computer classroom from time to time if I wanted, but I would have to meet my students half-way across campus and then go beg the Biology department to be let in.

I'm really glad I'm not teaching at that place any more. : )

P.S. Thanks for inviting Jen, Lori. She's looking forward to catching up with everyone.

I'm glad you didn't have to strike! About the computer lab (or lack thereof), yes it sucks that you can't always be in one, but then again, no one can check facebook all period like one of my students did today. If I had known her computer number, I would have locked her out. Alas, perhaps next time. Oh, and I can "spy" on my students in the lab. With one click of a button, I can see what they have on their screens. No surprise, it's facebook, same as at ISU.

    A Project Runway Marathon!

If you didn't catch Olberman's commentary on Rumsfeld's remarks, they're worth a listen...really inspiring, almost epic. God, I love that man.

I'm linking here to crooksandliars.com, but you might have to scroll down a bit to find the Olberman video.

Yeah! I was hoping that you would not have to strike! We have computer labs for the English department, but only two. I don't use them much because they are a hassle, but they belong to the English department and no one else can use them, so that's something. JEff and I are looking into grant $ for more of them.

I love Project Runway! I am obsessed with Michael, he is the one I am rooting for!

Okay, now that I'm caught up, Michael is my favorite too! That outfit of his last night was way better than that idiot's (Jeffrey?).

The lab here is great...really big with tables in the center and all the whistles and bells you'd see at, say, Heartland, but it's a weird political thing getting to use it.

At the risk of sounding about 15, Michael is soooo much better then that dork Jeffery. I don't like Jeffery because he was mean to someone's mom. If that was my mom there would have been a smack down!
