I Cried Because I Had to Attend a Day of Faculty Orientation...
And then I heard from Paul M. who had to attend for 4 Days! He called last night around 12:30, apparently unaware of the 4-hour time difference!
The orientation was a bit of a yawner, but I suppose that's to be expected. I did get very lucky and somehow chose a table with a new faculty member in nursing & two newbys from my department (Kathleen in Communications and Ruth in Journalism). Both wonderful people who are doing very interesting things. Our fourth new full-timer Greg G, who Oren may know from Florida (Lynn and Gary were both on his committee & I think he graduated right before they left) sat across the room, but joined us for lunch.
That's my megre update...

I had two days of orientation and 1 all-campus meeting (today). They made a really good effort to orient us, but no one talked about "important" things, really. A lot about the area and services available on campus. No folklore at all...

Oh Lori,
While I only had three hours of new faculty orientation, I had 2 1/2 days of meetings and stuff for all faculty. I was so bored I almost cried. FOrtunately they fed us, but still!!! Of course that was last week, I am just finsiheding my first week of school! So it could be worse!

Well, it's better than no orientation at all. Between the last two institutions I've taught at, I have had a grand total of one hour's worth of orientation and a tour of campus, if you don't count the TA orientation I attended voluntarily to learn more about the college, the writing program, and things like how students can find and use the writing center.
It would have been nice if during orientation at my last institution they talked about things like cost reimbursement for academic trips. I swear to you I had to go to three different web sites and two different offices on campus to get forms and have forms signed by three different people--all last minute, of course, because I didn't realize that such forms even existed. Thus, my expenses were not met by the college because I missed the deadline for submission, even though my forms were in the hands of the English Department Chair before the submission deadline. Grrr.
As boring as they are, I have to admit that you learn a lot about the context of the college/ university at those things. It's one of those things you don't miss until it's gone. And then you're in the middle of the quarter trying to set up a blackboard site for the next quarter when you're informed that you can't do so without attending a blackboard workshop that was held two weeks ago. : )

Lori, the missing part of your post is why are you getting calls from Paul (at any hour)?

He calls from time to time to chat about stuff...last time was about the job search...
I think he was a bit panicked about the new job after 4 days of top-down instruction in what to do/not to do. And I'd be calling one of ya'll if I'd been through that.
But he's feeling better and planning to use a lot of what he learned from Susie in his classes this year.
:)
